The soul of The Maelstrom comes from both its complex blend and its time spent in the toasted and charred casks from Adirondack Barrel Cooperage. That time goes by riding on the ferocious waves of the Great Lakes aboard the Kinn boats.
Mind you, this isn’t some 1000-foot freighter than barely feels a wave. They tackle the unpredictable torrent and the movement passes into the casks, where the constant churning against char and toasted oak both tempers and tames the bourbon in ways that simply can’t be achieved by sitting in an old rickhouse.
Part of a ten boat fleet from Kinn’s out of their port on the Door Peninsula of Wisconsin, the summer heat in the days mixes with the cool nights to accentuate the barrel breathing. And the relentless attitude of the lake multiplies the barrel contact far beyond any other bourbon.
So now as the big King Salmon are hitting, The Maelstrom is biding her time down below, waiting for the opportunity to be part of yet another great fish story.
